Navigating bereavement in schools with Just ‘B’

Supporting children and young people at school who are grieving a significant person can be challenging. However, we know that, as educators, you’re always committed to the wellbeing of your students, and we recognise the importance of providing compassionate support during tricky times. With the right guidance, we can make a meaningful difference in your students’ journey.

Just ‘B’ helps by providing children and young people with a dedicated space to share, explore, and develop an understanding of their lives and emotional responses.

Our support package can be tailored to your primary, secondary or alternative provision school.

Schools can access our consultancy for staff and training alongside our one-to-one bereavement support.

“We have seen the difference for our children and young people who are able to work through emotional wellbeing challenges with the right support – and we are really proud to have a partnership with such a skilled, expert organisation so that we can equip our students with the confidence; the resilience and skills they need to live happy and healthy lives.”

Contact Just ‘B’ about support in your school

How does our grief support in schools work?

Our Just ‘B’ support workers come to you, meeting with individual students within your school setting. Typically, students will meet fortnightly with their support worker.

During the sessions, we offer the child or young person a safe space to explore their emotional wellbeing and any difficulties they’re experiencing. Each session is led by the young person and their individual needs.

All of our Just ‘B’ support workers work closely with family members, caregivers, and school staff throughout the work.

What does a typical contract look like, and how much does it cost?

No one school is the same; we tailor our support to them. We can offer half days (3.75 hours) or full days (7.5 hours), and schools typically access between one and four days per week.

Schools tend to sign up for a full academic year, though some opt for shorter contracts, such as six months.

A half day would typically cost between £116.25 and £135.

We don’t have much budget; can we still access support?

With our charity’s ultimate aim to reach more children and young people who need help with their emotional well-being, please speak to us about how we can design a package to suit your budget.

Training or consultancy may be options if you can’t commit to a package with one of our support workers.

Our support for bereaved students is free, and our Just ‘B’ Respond service supports communities following a crisis.

We also have a bank of useful free resources, including everything from self-care tips for darker days to managing significant dates like Mother’s Day.

“Samantha, our school’s Just ‘B’ Support Worker, has got to know my daughter and understands that she is conscientious and wants to do well. This allows her to trust that she will be believed when she needs support. Samantha has eased a difficult transition back to school after six months and made it much more positive than it would have been. This has been an incredibly difficult time, and Samantha’s help has had a huge impact on us as a family.”
