Bereavement support for adults

SCROLL DOWN

Bereavement is something that most of us will experience at some time in our lives.

Grief can impact us all in different ways; emotionally, physically, the way we think, what we believe in and how we relate to others. It can be hard to manage, not only your own, but a loved one’s feelings.

Grief can evoke a powerful range of often confusing and conflicting emotions. It is, however, a normal and natural response to death and most people who experience it learn to live with the feelings and reactions bereavement has brought. But some, who experience more complicated grief, may need professional support.

We’re here with bereavement counselling for adults across Harrogate, Hambleton and Richmondshire. Our support is for people experiencing any type of bereavement, including suicide, road traffic accident or terminal illness.

We provide this counselling support from our bases in Harrogate and Thirsk.

Referrals

Just ‘B’ is not a crisis service, but if you need to speak to someone in the event of a mental health crisis, call NHS 111 and choose option 2.

Introducing a charge to our adult bereavement counselling

To ensure this support can help people now and in the future, we are introducing a £30 charge per session for adults accessing bereavement counselling from 1 April 2025.

Just ‘B’ receives no government funding. We rely on donations, grants and working together with other organisations, schools and partners to provide our services. As demand for our services grows and costs of providing our support rise, without additional funding we’ve had to make this challenging decision to ensure the continued delivery of our much-needed support.

To make sure this charge remains accessible and in line with our values and mission, we’ve taken the decision to cap and subsidise at £30 per session – well below the national average for bereavement support provision. We recognise not everyone will be able to afford this charge, and we’ll work on a client-by-client basis to identify help and solutions for those who are not able to pay. Your options for paying this charge will be communicated to you as part of your referral.

This charge applies to adult clients accessing our bereavement support in Harrogate, Hambleton and Richmondshire.

Just ‘B’ is also funded and works in partnership to provide specialist support for those bereaved by suicide across North Yorkshire. If you’re accessing our support for bereavement by suicide, the charge will not apply.

This decision will ultimately safeguard our service to continue the specialist bereavement support that so many members of our community rely upon when it’s most needed – providing us with vital funding. Without taking this decision now, we believe the service would no longer be able to sustain itself and our support, in this form, would no longer exist.

Our payment and attendance information provides you with the details on our process.
